Neon crossings, old temples and the best food in Japan
The capital, and the arrival point for almost every itinerary. Old and new sit close together: Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest temple, and the forest at Meiji Jingu are a few stops from Shibuya’s scramble crossing and the Shinjuku high-rises. Spend a day on food walks and market streets, then look back over the city from Tokyo Skytree or Tokyo Tower.
Getting around. The JR Yamanote loop and the Tokyo Metro reach almost everywhere. Load a Suica or Pasmo card (or add one to a phone wallet) and tap through every gate. Try to avoid the 8–9 am and 6–7 pm rush hours.
