Japan’s kitchen: neon canals, street food and a castle
Japan’s kitchen, where the local saying is kuidaore: eat until you drop. Dotonbori’s neon canal, the Kuromon market arcades and the takoyaki counters are the heart of it, with Osaka Castle and Universal Studios Japan in the same city. It is livelier and more relaxed than Tokyo, and Kyoto and Nara are a short train ride away.
Getting around. The Osaka Metro is the easiest way around: the Midosuji line links Umeda, Shinsaibashi, Namba and Tennoji. Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi and Kuromon Market are all within a short walk of each other.

Best time to visit
November
Autumn colours in the castle park late in the month.
Cherry blossom usually peaks in early April, with the castle park and river banks full. Mild days make it a good time for the food streets.
Rainy season in June and early July, then very hot and humid. Tenjin Matsuri on the river on 24–25 July is one of Japan’s big festivals.
Typhoons can pass in September. From late October the weather is mild and clear, and the colours reach the castle park in November.
Cold but mostly dry, with fewer visitors. Hot street food tastes best now, and the city is lit up for the winter illuminations.
