Snow peaks, pine valleys and the road to Lahaul
A mountain town at about 2,050 m in the Kullu Valley, and the gateway to Lahaul, Spiti and Ladakh. Manali has pine forests, the river Beas, the old temples and cafés of Old Manali, and snow play at Solang Valley. The Atal Tunnel now links it to Lahaul all year round, weather permitting.
Getting around. The Mall and Old Manali are walkable, and taxis cover the rest. Rohtang Pass needs a permit and is open only in the warmer months. Union taxis run fixed-fare routes to Solang and the tunnel.

Best time to visit
March
Best time for most hill stations. Manali and Dharamshala at their finest — warm days, cool nights, no snow on roads.
Heavy rains in lower hills. Spiti Valley is rain-shadow and stays accessible. Landslides can close Manali–Leh Highway.
Clear skies, spectacular views of Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges. Apple harvest season. Cooler but comfortable.
Solang Valley and Kufri get snow. Rohtang Pass and Spiti are cut off. Ideal for snowfall seekers in Shimla and Manali.
