Where to go
Manali
At 2,050 m in the Kullu Valley, Manali is the gateway to Lahaul, Spiti, and Leh-Ladakh. Solang Valley, Old Manali, and Rohtang Pass.
Shimla
The colonial summer capital of British India at 2,206 m — the Mall Road, Christ Church, Jakhu Hill, and the Himalayan Queen toy train.
McLeod Ganj
Home of the Dalai Lama and Tibetan government-in-exile. Dharamkot treks, Bhagsu Waterfall, and superb Tibetan cuisine.
Dharamshala
Seat of the Tibetan government in exile, in two parts: the lower town, and McLeod Ganj about 500 m above it, where the Dalai Lama's residence and the Tsuglagkhang temple complex are. Bhagsunag falls is a short walk from McLeod Ganj.
Dalhousie
A small colonial hill station spread over five hills at around 1,970 m, quieter than Shimla or Manali. Khajjiar, a meadow ringed by deodar 22 km away, and the Kalatop sanctuary are the usual day trips.
Must-see experiences
Atal Tunnel
A 9.02 km road tunnel under the Pir Panjal range on NH-3, linking Manali with the Lahaul valley and bypassing Rohtang Pass.
Bhagsunag Falls
A roughly 20-30 m waterfall reached by a 15-30 minute walk on a marked trail behind the Bhagsunag temple in Bhagsu, above McLeod Ganj.
Hadimba Devi Temple
A four-tier pagoda-style wood and stone temple of 1553, built over a cave shrine in the Dhungiri cedar forest above Manali.
Jakhu Temple
Hilltop Hanuman temple on Shimla's highest point, with a 108-foot Hanuman statue, reached on foot, by road or by the Jakhu ropeway.
Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary
A 17.17 sq km deodar and blue-pine wildlife sanctuary in Chamba district, about 10 km on foot from Dalhousie, laid out with forest trails.
Khajjiar
An open saucer-shaped meadow ringed by deodar and pine forest between Dalhousie and Chamba, with a small silted lake and the Khajji Nag temple.
Kufri
Open hill area 12 km from Shimla with viewpoints, a Himalayan wildlife park, horse rides to Mahasu Peak and separately priced adventure venues.
Mall Road, Shimla
Pedestrian shopping street a level below The Ridge, lined with shops, showrooms and cafes, closed to vehicles except emergency traffic.
McLeod Ganj
A suburb of Dharamshala at about 2,082 m that has been the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile and the Dalai Lama since 1960.
Naggar Castle
A 15th-century timber-and-stone castle of the Kullu rajas above the Beas, now an HPTDC heritage hotel that day visitors can tour.
Old Manali
The original hillside village of Manali, up across the Manalsu stream from the modern town, now lined with guesthouses and cafes.
Solang Valley
An open meadow 13 km from Manali on the Rohtang road, used for paragliding and zorbing in summer and skiing in winter.
The Ridge, Shimla
Open pedestrian plaza above The Mall, site of Christ Church, the state library and Shimla's main public events.
Tsuglagkhang Complex (Dalai Lama Temple)
The Dalai Lama's main temple complex in McLeod Ganj, housing Namgyal Monastery, the Kalachakra temple and his residence.

Seasons at a glance
Summer
March–June
Best time for most hill stations. Manali and Dharamshala at their finest — warm days, cool nights, no snow on roads.
Monsoon
July–September
Heavy rains in lower hills. Spiti Valley is rain-shadow and stays accessible. Landslides can close Manali–Leh Highway.
Autumn
October–November
Clear skies, spectacular views of Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges. Apple harvest season. Cooler but comfortable.
Winter
December–February
Solang Valley and Kufri get snow. Rohtang Pass and Spiti are cut off. Ideal for snowfall seekers in Shimla and Manali.
Festivals & events
