Because no taxi or auto can reach The Mall, you either climb steeply from Cart Road or use the public passenger lift near the Old Bus Stand, which charges a small per-person fee and saves a hard ascent with luggage. The street sits a level below The Ridge, so the two are connected by short flights of steps rather than being the same promenade.
