"The Golden Temple, and the border at sundown"
Overview
Punjab appears in these itineraries as a two-night addition to a Himachal trip, and effectively means Amritsar. The Golden Temple is open around the clock and serves a free community kitchen to tens of thousands of people a day. Jallianwala Bagh, a few minutes' walk away, marks the 1919 massacre. The Wagah border ceremony runs each evening at the Pakistan frontier, 30 km west.
Where to go
Amritsar
Founded around the sacred pool that the Golden Temple now sits in. The walled old city around it is dense and walkable; Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition Museum are both within a few minutes of the temple, and the Wagah border is 30 km west.

Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib)
The central gurdwara of Sikhism, a gold-leafed sanctum standing in the middle of the Amrit Sarovar tank and open to visitors 24 hours a day.
Jallianwala Bagh
The walled public garden where British troops fired on an unarmed gathering on 13 April 1919, now a national memorial with free entry.
Wagah Border Ceremony
The daily flag-lowering Beating Retreat performed jointly by India's BSF and the Pakistan Rangers at the Attari-Wagah checkpost, free to attend.

Winter
November–March
Cool and clear, 5–20°C. The comfortable season for walking the Golden Temple complex and standing at Wagah in the evening.
Summer
April–June
Punjab is among the hottest parts of northern India, regularly above 40°C. The temple marble becomes painful underfoot by midday.
Monsoon
July–September
Humid with heavy bursts of rain. Fewer visitors, and the Wagah ceremony still runs unless the weather is severe.
Autumn
October
A short shoulder window: heat has broken, crowds have not yet peaked. Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas light the temple complex.
