Where to go
Srinagar
Dal Lake, Nagin Lake, and the Jhelum River form the backdrop of Kashmir's capital. Mughal gardens, old city bazaars, and a thriving shikara culture.
Gulmarg
At 2,650 m, Gulmarg is India's premier ski resort and home to the Gondola — the world's second-highest cable car at 3,979 m.
Pahalgam
The valley of shepherds — meadows, pine forests, and the Lidder River. Gateway to the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage.
Sonamarg
The 'meadow of gold', at 2,800 m on the road to Ladakh, where the Sindh valley opens out below glaciers. Thajiwas Glacier is a short pony ride or walk from the road head. The Zojila pass beyond closes in winter.
Jammu
The winter capital and the rail and road gateway into the Kashmir valley from the plains. Most itineraries pass through rather than stay, with the Raghunath temple complex the main stop in the city itself.

Betaab Valley
A gated, ticketed meadow-and-river valley 15 km from Pahalgam, named after the 1983 Hindi film shot there.
Dal Lake Shikara Ride
A hired wooden shikara boat ride on Dal Lake, booked per boat per hour from the numbered ghats along Boulevard Road in Srinagar.
Gulmarg Gondola
Two-phase cable car from Gulmarg to Kongdoori and on towards Apharwat Peak, operated by the J&K Cable Car Corporation.
Mughal Gardens, Srinagar
A set of three terraced 17th-century Mughal gardens on Dal Lake's eastern side - Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh and Chashme Shahi - ticketed separately.
Srinagar Old City
The medieval quarter of Srinagar on both banks of the Jhelum, known locally as Shehr-e-Khaas or Downtown, built around wooden shrines and bazaars.
Thajiwas Glacier
A glacier and waterfall bowl about 3 km from Sonamarg, reached on foot or by hired pony.

Spring
March–May
Almond and cherry blossoms bloom across the valley. Tulip Garden in Srinagar is the largest in Asia. Ideal for sightseeing.
Summer
June–August
Peak season. Warm days perfect for Sonamarg, Pahalgam, and shikara rides on Dal Lake.
Autumn
September–November
Chinar trees turn gold and crimson. Saffron fields bloom in October. Fewer crowds, stunning colours.
Winter
December–February
Gulmarg gets 4–5 m of snow — the best skiing in South Asia. Dal Lake occasionally freezes.
