"Monasteries, high passes and the road to Tawang"
Overview
India's north-easternmost state, reached overland from Assam on a road that climbs from Brahmaputra floodplain to 4,170 m at Sela Pass in a single day. Tawang, near the Bhutan and Tibet borders, holds the largest monastery in India and the second largest anywhere. Every visitor needs a permit: an Inner Line Permit for Indian nationals, a Protected Area Permit for foreign ones. Weather and landslides govern the schedule more than the itinerary does.
Where to go
Tawang
At 3,048 m near the Bhutan and Tibet borders, built around a 17th-century monastery that is the largest in India. Bum La Pass and Madhuri Lake lie beyond it on a separate permit.
Bomdila
A hill town at 2,415 m on the road to Tawang, with a Buddhist monastery and views across the Kameng valley. Most itineraries stop a night here to break the climb.
Dirang
A valley town at 1,500 m, warmer than the towns either side of it, known for hot springs, apple orchards and the old stone Dirang Dzong.
Bhalukpong
The foothill town on the Assam border where the climb into Arunachal begins, on the bank of the Kameng river. Permits are checked here.

Gontse Gaden Rabgyel Lling, a working Mahayana Buddhist monastery in Bomdila spread across three separate gompas on the hillside.
Bum La Pass
India-China border pass at about 4,600 m, 37 km from Tawang, visited on an escorted day run under a special permit.
Madhuri Lake (Sangetsar Lake)
High-altitude lake formed by a landslide-dammed river on the Tawang-Bum La road, at about 3,708 m.
Sela Pass
Public highway pass at about 4,170 m on NH-13 between Dirang and Tawang, with Sela Lake near the summit.
Tawang Monastery
Galden Namgey Lhatse, the largest monastery in India, overlooking the Tawang Chu valley at about 3,000 m.
Weather & best time to visit
Seasons at a glance
Spring
March–May
Rhododendrons flower along the Bomdila and Tawang roads and the passes are reliably open. The clearest mountain views of the year.
Summer
June–August
Monsoon rain brings landslides on the Bhalukpong–Tawang road and closures that can last days. Not a season to schedule tightly.
Autumn
September–November
Skies clear again after the rain and temperatures are cold but manageable. The second good window, and the quieter one.
Winter
December–February
Heavy snow closes Sela Pass and Bum La for stretches at a time. Tawang is reachable when the pass is open, but nothing can be promised.
