The adventure capital, set on a mountain lake
New Zealand’s adventure capital, set on Lake Wakatipu and ringed by the Remarkables mountain range. It is the birthplace of commercial bungy jumping, and the main South Island base for day trips to Milford Sound, Glenorchy and Arrowtown. It is equally good for those who prefer to ride the gondola and enjoy the view.
Getting around. The town centre is small and walkable. Tours and buses run to Arrowtown, Glenorchy and Gibbston, and most visitors book Milford Sound as a guided day.

Best time to visit
January
Warm days and long daylight. A busy time.
The warmest, sunniest stretch of the year — Auckland's daytime highs run 21–24°C and the North Island's beaches are at their best. Christmas and New Year is the single busiest, most expensive window on the calendar, with accommodation in Queenstown and the Bay of Islands booking out months ahead. Tropical cyclone remnants occasionally reach the North Island between January and March.
Settled, mild weather and the thinnest crowds of the year. Central Otago's poplars and oaks — especially around Arrowtown and Wanaka — turn gold from early April, peaking mid-to-late April; the Arrowtown Autumn Festival (15–19 April 2026) marks the season. It also coincides with grape harvest across the Marlborough and Central Otago wine regions.
The South Island's alpine resorts open for the season — Coronet Peak and The Remarkables above Queenstown run mid-June to early October, with the Queenstown Winter Festival returning 20–29 June 2026. Snow settles on the Southern Alps and the central North Island volcanoes, while Auckland and the north stay mild but wetter — July's average daytime high is just 14.4°C.
Lambing season across farmland, wildflowers, and lengthening daylight, with fewer crowds and lower prices than summer. Weather is the most changeable time of year — a warm, still day can turn to wind and rain quickly, so layers matter more here than in any other season.
