Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early and sit on the steps facing upriver — latecomers end up behind the standing crowd with no view of the lamps at all. Leave shoes at one of the stalls near the entrance rather than carrying them, and keep bags on your lap; the ghat empties into a narrow lane afterwards and the crush is real.
