Evening departure from Delhi by Volvo (recommended) or private SUV. Arrive Shimla by early morning. Light breakfast at Mall Road, Shimla. Acclimatisation hour at 2,200m before driving deeper. The Spiti adventure has begun.
One of the longest single-day mountain drives in India (10-12 hrs). The landscape transforms — from Shimla's pine forests, to Kinnaur's apple orchards (Rampur, Reckong Peo), to the barren cold-desert beauty of Nako and Tabo. Cross dramatic roads carved into cliffs. Pass through Hangrang Valley, Sumdo (Kinnaur-Spiti border). Arrive Kaza by evening (altitude 3,800m). Light dinner, early rest for acclimatisation. NO alcohol or strenuous activity Day 1.
Slow morning to continue acclimatising. Visit Key Monastery — Spiti's iconic 1,000-year-old hilltop monastery, prayer halls with ancient murals. Visit Kibber village (one of the highest motorable villages in the world). Drive to Tashigang and back via Chicham Bridge — Asia's highest suspension bridge. Visit Kaza market for traditional Spitian crafts, butter tea at a local café. Evening at Hotel Deyzor for an early dinner.
Today, the high-altitude village circuit. Drive to Hikkim — world's highest post office at 4,400m. Send a postcard to friends and family (it actually gets delivered). Continue to Komic — one of the highest motorable villages in the world (4,587m), home to a small monastery. Langza — known for fossils (the region was once an ocean floor 100 million years ago — fossils literally on the ground) and the iconic giant Buddha statue overlooking the valley. Packed mountain lunch. Return to Kaza by evening.
Slow morning. Optional: drive to Tabo Monastery (the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas' — 1,000-year-old wall paintings — extension day). Café hopping at Kaza's Alpinist or Sol. Evening photography session at signature viewpoints. The main event: stargazing. Spiti has zero light pollution and minimal atmospheric moisture — the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. Tripod-set photography session. Farewell bonfire dinner.
Early breakfast. Begin the long return journey via the Manali route (Jun-Oct only — Kunzum Pass + Rohtang) or Shimla route (year-round). Overnight stop at Manali or Reckong Peo. Reach Delhi the next day.
